Your Guide to Seattle Airports

One of the main things that you have to learn about when going to a city is its airports. As such, if you are planning to visit Seattle in the state of Washington, then you should know that while there are other Seattle airports that you can use during your travel, the primary airport here is the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, (or Sea-Tac Airport). This is the main airport that serves the area of Puget Sound, which you can use for both international and domestic travels. Other airports in Seattle that you can find near the area are the Tacoma Narrows Airport that can be found on 1202 – 26th Avenue N.W, Gig Harbor in Washington and the Kenmore Air Harbor Inc Seaplane Base, although this would be more fitting for chartered flights.

 

Known to be the main airport among the airports of Seattle, the Seattle Tacoma International Airport can be found 19 kilometers to the southern area of Seattle. If you are planning to head on immediately to the city from this airport, you can take the 518 state route and then the I-5. Aside from Seattle car rentals, there are also limousines, taxis and buses that could ferry you to your destination from the Ground Transportation Centre of the airport, which is undoubtedly one the best airports in Seattle.

 

As one of the primary Seattle airports, you can expect all your questions and directional needs to be attended to in the Seattle Tacoma Airport. At the main terminal of the airport, you will be able to find help desks where uniformed personnel are available and always at the ready to answer all your queries. As can be expected from any of the airports in Seattle, there is also a Washington State visitor information desk at the airport and this can be found on the level where you can reclaim your baggage.

 

As an international airport and a primary one among the airports of Seattle, the Seattle Tacoma Airport is also equipped with other facilities that would cater to all your needs and wants like food, drinks and even currency exchange, among others. This is because there are available foreign exchange booths, ATMs and even Internet access in the airport. There are also a great number of refreshment facilities at the main terminal like a Taco Bell, a Starbucks coffee shop and the Africa Lounge. Unlike other Seattle airports, there is also a meditation room, shoe shine, a massage room as well as separate toilets for families and pets available in this airport. There are also disabled facilities in the airport, as can be commonly found in other airports of Seattle, like wheelchair access, amplified phones, parking bays and lifts.

Travel options from Seattle Airport

Upon arriving at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, which is about 14 miles from the city, there are many travel options you can take to go into the Seattle.

Driving from the airport into Seattle: There are two main exits leaving the airport. Take the first exit if you plan on staying in a hotel near the airport, take the second exit, Washington 518 if you plan on going into the city. Driving east on 518 will take you to I-5 which will take you into the city.  Allow at least 30 minutes for the drive time and additional time if it is during peak rush hours.

Taxi service: Generally this will cost around $38 dollars but as the prices of fuel rise so will the fare rates. There are usually taxis available around the airport but if not you can call: Yellow Cab: (206) 622-6500 or Farwest Taxi: (206) 622-1717.  

Gray Line Airport Express provides shuttle bus service from the airport to downtown Seattle. They run from 5am until 11 pm. They pick up from two booths outside the luggage claim area. Outside of Door 24 and Door 8. They run every 20 minutes and stop at the following hotels,  Madison Renaissance, Crowne Plaza, Four-Seasons Olympic, Sheraton Seattle, Seattle Hilton and Westin and Warwick. The fare is usually around $9 one way and $15 dollars round trip.

Shuttle Express:(800) 487-7433 Provides 24 hours service from the airport to Seattle, North Seattle, and Bellevue. If you are planning on taking this to the airport you will need a reservation, but when leaving the airport you can simply call by using one of the courtesy phones at the Travler's Information Center. Simply push 48 and you will be connected. Fare is usally around $25 plus $3 for additional person.

Metro Transit: (800) 542-7876  Has two buses operating between the airport and downtown Seattle. Buses run from 4:55 am until 8:33 pm on weekdays and 6:20am to 7:20 pm on weekends. Buses leave from door 6. Fare is usally $1.25 off peak hours and $2 during peak hours. You can call and get a current schedular before you arrive just to be sure.

  • Head south on International Blvd
  • Turn right (signs for Sea-Tac Airport)
  • Merge onto WA-518 E via the ramp to I-405/I-5/Seattle/Tacoma
  • Take the exit on the left onto I-5 N toward Seattle
